The course is delivered by the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. in Edmonton. To complete training for certification, candidates must complete on the job work experience followed by Level 2 training.

Upon completion of Level 2 experience and technical training, candidates are eligible to write the certification examination. The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. Gas Utility Operator Program Course outline follows the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training Gas Utility Operator Competency Profile.

Completion of the online course work and assessments in the modules is required prior to attending the 3 week practical training at the Federation. Module assessments will be tabulated and weighted as 10% of your final Federation grade.

Your final Federation examination will occur at the end of the practical training component. This is a closed-book, supervised, and print-based exam.

Your Provincial certification examination will occur upon successful completion of the Level 2 training.

All training courses at the Federation of Alberta Gas Co-op are for Members only. Non-Members would be considered if a training course does not reach full capacity.

The Grant Program is a partnership between the Federation and Alberta Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development. Alberta Agriculture provides the funding for the grant, which is then disbursed by the Federation following the rules and procedures as agreed to between Alberta Agriculture and the Federation. 

Eligible rural gas utilities include any rural natural gas distribution co-op, rural municipal gas utility, or rural First Nations gas utility, regardless of whether they are Federation Members.

The Rural Gas Grant was a key part of the 1973 Rural Gas Program and remains a significant factor in keeping the cost of natural gas service to Alberta’s rural residents and agriculture community affordable. Under the formula, a homeowner or farmer pays the first portion of the cost of installing a new service.

If the average cost of all eligible services exceeds an annually predetermined threshold (currently $8,000), the costs above the threshold become eligible for grant support with the grant program  paying for 75% of the costs above the threshold. If the cost of the service is more than $30,000, the costs above $30,000 are ineligible for grant support.
